Mail Bag: Pittsburgh Wedding Video

Dave,

Mike and I got the video in the mail yesterday. We got to watch it last night. We LOVED it! You and your staff did an amazing job! We were so excited to watch it. We especially liked how you edited parts of the ceremony, reception..etc. for it not to be too long, but not leave out important details of the day. We felt like we were starring in our own movie! The video will be one of the most memorable reminders of our wedding day. I think we are going to watch it again this weekend! :)

Thanks again for making the trip to Pittsburgh on such a tight schedule. You and your staff's commitment truly showed on that day! Thank you for being a part of our special day and making it one we will never forget!

On the way to Cape May . . .

I just want to congratulate our newest Creative Editor, Danielle Rogal Redenbaugh, on a fantastic edit.

It is obvious from the email below that Danielle's thoughtful shot choices and use of voiceovers turned a beautiful Congress Hall wedding into a timeless film for Chris and Jenn. We are very proud to have Danielle join our creative team as a shooter and an editor.

Dave Williams, DVideography

[Please post a comment]

Hi Guys,

We had a really busy (all fun) weekend, and I finally got time to really watch the movie and give it the time it deserved.

We are just in awe at how awesome you guys are. I don't even think you can classify these as wedding videos the way there is so much thought that goes into it.

I was watching the video thinking "Oh it was pretty cool that I caressed Jenn just then or kissed her at a special moment", but then I remembered.... Dave directed me to do that, and I was just being an obedient groom. But it really is impressive how you have the vision of how it will look in the final video, or to us our cinema masterpiece. We love all the panning and just great shots.

Danielle, you had me and everyone else tearing up.........ok I shed a few tears. Once I finally truly watched it, I felt like I got what you were doing with the different scenes and the way they transitioned from one another. I really loved the tribute to Jenn's mom, just enough to feel it, but then it transitioned into my mom welcoming her as a daughter. Awesome job. I was so attached to that other song, but it was a great call to use this music, it fit perfect.

EVERYONE says oh its like your watching a real movie, not someone's wedding.......which you guys must here all the time.

Just wanted to let you know that we really did notice and appreciate all the work you put into it.

Thank you very much.

Chris and Jenn

Hi Dave,

I finally had a chance to watch my wedding video. It was hands down the best thing I've ever seen in my entire life. Being a bridesmaid 10 times, I have never seen a video quite so professional and movie-like. Thanks again for everything. You really out-did yourself!

Mail Bag: Morgan and Matt

Hi Dave and Sheryl

Thank you so much for the most amazing video we've ever seen. We knew when we hired you for our wedding you would produce nothing less than spectacular. We watched the video last night with my parents in absolute awe and with so much gratitude. We laughed and cried throughout the whole thing and were able to relive the incredible day that was our wedding. Please tell all of your production staff thank you and that we appreciate the hard work and effort that was put into the video. The editing alone was unbelievable. Thank you for fixing our introduction into the ballroom. It sounds a lot better to be married to Matt rather than his brother, Mike and thank you for cutting the Ave Maria part short. I remember standing there thinking, "why are they still playing." You knew exactly how to re-create the evening and make it better and more perfect.

I know that you were still working on it as of yesterday morning and when I received the call from my dad say he was coming home with the video I literally jumped out of my chair at work and yelled, "YES!" After watching the trailer about 1000 times and showing it to all of our friends they've been waiting with anticipation to see the rest of the video. Even my office wants to have a wedding movie lunch break so they can see it. I'm sure I'll be watching the video everyday for at least the next month. It'll definitely become a fixture in my dvd drive.

The out-takes were hilarious and I'm so happy that you put the part with you and me in there. I would certainly want to remember you as a part in my wedding day rather than someone behind the scenes. Even though we've only spoken a few times and spent a couple of hours together I felt an immediate connection as I know my father has as
well. I hope that in years to come we'll stay in touch and you'll be there to capture future events and milestones in our lives.

Have a wonderful weekend!
All the best,

Same Day Edit - Part 1 - What's all the Fuss?

Back in late 2004, I was interviewed for an EventDV article on "The Art of the Wedding-Day Edit". We had a lot of experience already producing Wedding Day Edits (also known as Same Day Edits) and I knew it would take off. Here we are, three years later with new technology, more creative video producers, a real appreciation for this art form, and the Same Day Edit is all the rage.

Now entire lectures are held on the topic each year at conferences hosted by the largest videographer association in the world - the Wedding and Event Videographers Association (WEVA) - and a younger organization, The 4Ever Group. With all of this new interest, I figured I would break it all down for our readers and demystify today's Same Day Edit with several episodes over the coming weeks. Of course, we should start with what a Same Day Edit (SDE) is.

An SDE can be something as simple as a montage of the moments of the day displayed at the cocktail hour or as complex as a mind-blowing short film including pre-produced segments shot and edited days, weeks, or even months before the event. The possibilities are limited only by imagination and the budget. But one thing is certain; a good Same Day Edit can bring real energy to the party. Guests will laugh, cry, and be amazed.

Most videographers have always offered some sort of large screen projection at events. But until the Same Day Edit became popular, what went on those screens was mostly limited to pre-produced segments or a live feed from on-site cameras. But videographers have gotten more creative as technology allows them to work more efficiently.

Editing systems are faster, smaller, and lighter, and the gear is easy to set up and tear down. Cameras are now equipped with hard drives or solid state media (like the memory card in your point and shoot still camera), doing away with the time-consuming task of capturing taped footage into the computer in real time. This all means that the bottlenecks that used to get in the way of actual editing time are virtually gone, allowing talented editors to create an emotional, high quality production in the time it takes to get from the ceremony to your first course at the reception.

For our first example in this series, let's take a look at Maria and Ron's Same Day Edit:
Maria and Ron
As a dancer her entire life, Maria convinced Ron to take dance lessons with her to prepare for their wedding. In our first meeting, Maria explained that she not only wanted her first dance to be perfect, she wanted her friends and family to see how their lives (and the dance) all came together. We came up with the plan to show their love story to the guests while Maria and Ron ducked out of the room to change into their dance attire. Maria and Ron's Same Day Edit was a customized hybrid of pre-production and day-of coverage that gave the perfect introduction to their first dance. As the video faded to black, the lights on the dance floor brightened just enough to reveal Ron and Maria live. It was magical.

Next time we'll take a look behind the scenes of Same Day Edits. Stay tuned.

Mail Bag: Michelle and Michael. Tarrytown, NY

Dave,

We just spent the day preparing for Thanksgiving, sat down on the couch with a glass of wine and checked our email to see that our trailer was waiting for us in our inbox! Michelle's parents were here with us and we all watched it ten times already, it was just phenomenal! From the first day we saw your work to the day of our wedding, you and your crew have been top-notch. Especially after driving five hours from a previous wedding to ours the next day, you guys were refreshed, energetic, and so much fun! Now we receive an email at 9:30pm the night before Thanksgiving letting us know our trailer is ready to be viewed, you guys are incredible!

As a professional in the wedding industry myself, I knew I wanted to hire only the best to film our wedding and there was always only one choice, DVideography! It's funny, my clients always say that we capture things that they forgot about or things that they can't even remember happening. It's hard to impress me and exceed my expectations because of my own experience, but wow! You guys were everywhere yet nowhere and captured some incredible footage, most of which flashed by extremely fast on our wedding day! With just our trailer, you guys have proved how valuable a videographer truly is! We can't wait for more! Michelle and I wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving and want to thank you for EVERYTHING!! Please keep in touch.

Warmest Regards,
Michelle and Michael DiChiaro

Mail Bag: Mom's Favorite Part Was The Outtakes

September 26, 2007

Dear Dave,

After speaking to your wife last week, I decided to write to tell you how pleased we are with the wedding video. Had the decision to have a video been mine, it would never have happened. I had no desire to have it for posterity. It was very important to our Dave, the groom. We figured it was a good project for him, along with picking the band. He did all the research and decided to go with DVideography. Just as he picked the band because he was impressed with its’ leader, Dave picked another Dave who impressed him, to do the video. We’re so very glad he did!

I have seen the completed video several times now and I cry every time! I can’t believe how much I would have forgotten! Until I saw the video, I was certain I had not seen the cake cutting, but there I am! However, my favorite part is the Outtakes! As you remember, we had some unique challenges! How many wedding videos have unintentional fire trucks! And the footage in the elevator is priceless. The procession from the Sofitel to Davio’s and the bridal party walking through downtown were both events we had not seen and would not have seen if not for video.

The biggest compliment I can give is that you were invisible. Yet you managed to be everywhere and capture everything. To me, that is the sign of a highly skilled, talented videographer. Not once were we aware of you doing your work! You were so unobtrusive that I don’t think I would recognize you!

As you can tell, I am a video convert. I now know that my previous experiences with “wedding video” was based on less professional work. I know several brides-to-be and will be recommending that they have video. Not just any video, but DVideography.

Thanks so much for an incredible finished product and flawless work the day of the wedding. We’ll recommend you to anyone who’ll listen.

Sallie Robinson

Outtakes: Stuck in an Elevator

Just to show you that we at DVideography have a sense of humor (and that weddings don't always run perfectly smooth), here's a look at one of our recent Outtakes chapters. Sarah and Dave - the bride and groom - took everything in stride. It was a gorgeous day and a beautiful wedding.

Just remember, when the sign reads "Maximum Capacity: 11", don't fill the elevator with 16.

Reactions on Hidden Camera

Nicole and Brian were so excited to hear we were shipping their DVDs that they asked if they could drive over to pick them up. They wanted to see some of the video right away. Knowing how fun they were, I decided to turn my little consumer palmcorder on them from the corner of the room. Here's their reaction.

Thanks for being such good sports and allowing me to share this Nicole!

Videojournalism Meets HD: HD Wedding Videos

I have never been one to 'talk tech' on my website. Nowhere will you find a picture of a video camera, or read about the kind of gear my audio engineers use. But this is different. HD is something everyone is beginning to appreciate.

When we were the first in the Philadelphia area to offer HD wedding video coverage over two years ago, we did not realize how long it would take before affordable Blu-Ray and HD DVD players would be available in Best Buy or Circuit City. It was a gamble I was willing to take.

As a wedding videojournalist, I've always loved the 16x9 (widescreen) format, the colors, and the breathtaking resolution. In the beginning, I delivered HD projects to a few of my corporate clients and began doing Same Day Edits in HiDef. However, with very few options to deliver HD content to consumers, there was little interest in HD among my brides and grooms.

This year it's different. Not only are clients asking for HD videos, we finally have numerous ways to deliver true HD content. We also have a lot of experience shooting and delivering HD weddings, with many completed projects to show prospective clients. "It's like looking through a window", remarked one of my recent clients.

Click on the picture above (a shot of me working hard in the Bridal Suite at the Ritz Carlton Hotel) to see a comparison of the resolutions available today.

Destination Video Australia

Last week I lectured in Melbourne, Australia at the PMA Australia 2007 Imaging Technology Expo. My lecture on Thursday covered some of the hottest trends in wedding and event video production and on Friday I held a mini hands-on workshop. Then, I was off to Sydney where I shot a beautiful Jewish wedding in Centennial Park. The reception was at Luna Park, just at the foot of Sydney's Harbor Bridge.

This video is a behind-the-scenes look through the lens of my small palmcorder that I brought along. On my way to Melbourne, I had some time in Los Angeles to visit and have dinner with my friend David Robin of Boulevard Video Productions. The first message on the video is from Dave to an Australian videographer named Dennis Illic.

Next, it was off to Melbourne where I connected with fellow lecturers Chris Chibucos of Furlavision Productions, Natalie Neal of Glass Slipper Productions, Jenny Lehman of Jenny Lehman Film and Video, Eng Tiong Teo of Pilgrim Pictures, Ross Herewini of efilms, and WEVA's director of marketing, John Zale.

And finally, I took a short flight to Sydney for some sight-seeing with my blokes and to shoot a wedding with Dave and Troy of D'nM Video Productions

Mail Bag: Letters from the bride, groom, AND Mom.

From the bride:

Dave,

We went away and just returned. I had to pick them up so that's why there's been a delay. Mom and Madison are out of the country so you'll be hearing from them I'm sure later this week as I'm off to the post office to mail them their copy right after I send this to you.

It's really incredible. Tom, the girls and I watched the video together and we laughed and cried and went crazy. It's so beautiful and the music is perfect. It's so special words can't express our feelings. What a treasure. I'm going to go crazy until Mom and Madison get home to see it. For Tom and I it was like being there for the first time. You're so talented I could go on and on.

Thank you so much again for your creative and hard work. We will let all our friends and family know that they can purchase a copy through you. We'll be in touch.

Angie

From the groom:

Hello Dave, Long time no hear sir….

Well I have to tell you, Angie and I were so excited to hear that the video had been completed, she made me promise that we watch it together, and we just recently watched the video with my 2 daughters since it was my week with the kids….

We are absolutely blown away by the video, it turned out so well, words cannot express how we both feel at the moment. We now know all the details, those things Angela and I had missed while we were caught up in the moment, feels like the day just blew by and we felt we missed so much, the video really brings out the joy, the beauty, and the moments that are etched in our memories for ever.

Thank You so much for your hard work, you and your staff have the gift of talent as the end result is nothing like we expected, it was so much more!
Angela and I want you to know, we are so very grateful that Jo and Madison picked you to do our video, and we Thank You from the bottom of our hearts. This is very special to us, and we will cherish this video for the rest of our lives.

When my daughters decide to wed, I know who to call!

Thank you for everything Dave, you guys are the Best!

Tom Torres

Dave,

We went away and just returned. I had to pick them up so that's why there's been a delay. Mom and Madison are out of the country so you'll be hearing from them I'm sure later this week as I'm off to the post office to mail them their copy right after I send this to you.

Angie

From Mom:

We are flabbergasted by your work. We have shown it to many friends and as they watch they invariably oooh and ahhhh over you! Everyone is blown away by the videography, editing, and music. It looks like a beautiful feature film. Yesterday I showed it to an actress friend of mine who said it sounded as though it had been scripted ... now that's good editing. And to think we don't even remember you being there! It boggles the mind, you are amazing. It has such a natural beautiful seamless flow that captures the day in perfect detail. Your sensitivity shows in every frame. To watch is to be served up our most intimate feelings by a master craftsman who understands the delicate subtleties of his task. The music choices are dead on. They carried us through every turn underscoring the journey in perfect harmony. It was especially wonderful to hear a string version of Beauty and the Beast played under the footage after Jeannne finished the song. Your choice of sound bites over the perfect footage is both thoughtful and beautiful. The rehearsal dinner prayer by my brother-in-law and so many other choices that took real thought and care. There is so much attention to detail that we know will hold even more meaning for us as the years go by. Words are not enough to express our appreciation for such immense care. Thank you, thank you, thank you without end.

In Deepest Gratitude and Respect,

Jo and Madison Galbraith

Mail Bag: Stephanie and Ken's Reaction

Hi Dave (and Sheryl)

Thank you so much for doing such an amazing job with our wedding video. We barely had it a week and had already watched it more than 20 times. It was great to be able to relive the experience together and to see moments of the day that we didn’t get to experience(Kenny enjoyed watching the girls get ready and I loved seeing everyone come down the aisle while I was waiting outside).

The whole thing was just put together unbelievably in a way that made it fun and engaging to watch – you can see everyone’s emotions, reactions and excitement, and the sound quality is flawless.

We been enjoying sharing the recap with our California friends who couldn’t make it out for the wedding, but our favorite part is definitely the outtakes. We were doubled over with laughter. I don’t know how you caught some of that footage -- you are a master and you captured everyone’s personalities perfectly.

Thanks you again, Dave. It was a pleasure working with you, Sheryl and your crew. We felt confident in your expertise, comfortable with your unobtrusive approach and knew that you had our wishes at the forefront of everything you did. You delivered customer service that exceeded our expectations – especially that Christmas Eve video delivery that made my parent’s year!

We wish you all the best in 2007 and hope our
paths cross on a project in the future.

Best,
Ken & Stephanie Tomei

Anything for the Shot

Hi Dave,

So I saw you the other week at the ASTRO meeting
zooming around the Accuray booth filming their launch of the 2006 Cyberknife. I was in from CA to attend the meeting with my client, Philips. I wanted to say hello but could tell you were busy. I swear you are EVERYWHERE!

Attached to the left is a shot Heather Fowler took of you strapped to the back of the golf cart. She also has one of you on top of the limo bus -- you go to great lenghts to get your shots! In fact, I saw the one on your blog when you went up in the bucket. So funny.

Anyway, I hope all is well with you and Sheryl. Take care.

Best,
Stephanie

Angela and Tom - New Hope, PA

Watch the Movie

Listen to the Parents' Voicemail

This was just one of those magically beautiful weddings. A perfect autumn day in a very colorful New Hope, Pennsylvania.

A little over 70 family and friends helped celebrate Angie and Tom's day. This had to be one of the most loving families we have shot.

It all began at the rehearsal dinner on Friday night at the Stockton Inn. Then the ceremony on Saturday at Thompson Memorial Presbyterian Church. Then off to a gorgeous event at the parent's home and barn, designed by Evantine Design with a delicious presentation catered by Max & Me.

Congratulations 'Gigi' and Tom! :-)

Karen and Amin at Appleford

Dave,

Your editing of the video is amazing! It is gorgeous. Anyone viewing it would be amazed.

Your capture of the ceremony is wonderful. The speeches, first dance, and cake cutting are great. We loved the shots you got of people hanging out together at the tables. We LOVED how you came upon our friend Bill telling the story about Amin.

The recap was beautiful. Everyone that has watched it has needed a box of tissues.

Karen

P.S. I thought I’d include some of the reactions we had to the recap…

Oh My Gosh.....This is so beautiful. I am totally speacheless. What a wonderful job they did on this....you too look so happy. I was so caught up in the actual moment that I missed out on the close ups. This is such a neat was to revisit that special day. Thanks for sharing!
That is the most beautiful wedding video I have ever seen. I can't believe I just cried here at my desk! I can only imagine how touched you and Amin are to have something so special. Your kids, God willing, are going to love watch that.
I know I'm preggo and emotional blah, blah, blah but that video left me blubbering like an idiot. I loved it.
This is absolutely fabulous!!! What a great way to remember your special day.
That was the most beautiful video. It was done so well and professionally, like no other wedding video I've seen. Thanks for sharing. Olivia got a kick out of watching it too.

Chuppah-Cam

Hello Dave ---

It's Billy Katz, from the Marshall-Katz wedding on September 3rd. Dave, I am so blown away by the Director’s View Recap of our wedding! I am completely amazed by how many highlights you were able to pack into four-and-a-half minutes --- everyone that has seen it has just raved. I myself have watched it over and over in the two days since we received it, and I get choked up every single time I see it. The voiceovers by the little kids are at once precious and poignant. The editing is seamless, and the whole video builds so beautifully from beginning to end. Even the music is just right!

And we weren't sure how you would work in the Chuppah-cam, but that lone shot of Megan and me embracing just after I smash the glass is so effective and dramatic! We really made the right choice of videographers, that's for sure. Everything about the video is so professional and perfect.

Dave, I can't thank you and your team enough for such attention to detail, and for helping us relive our event in such a joyous presentation. This is truly something we will treasure for years to come.

With Warmest Regards,

--- Billy

A Marriage Across the Pond

When William and Kristen married two weeks ago in Philadelphia, they knew they needed to share their joy with friends and family back in London as soon as possible.

The Director's View Recap was exactly what they needed.

Why I Love My Job

Dave.

All I have to say is that I received our wedding recap a week ago, and I have probably watched it 100 times since! Your ability to take an entire day and night and turn it into the most special 4 minute story of the best day of my life is just absolutely unbelieveable. Every bride will admit how much they wish they could have their wedding day all over again, and every time I watch the recap I truly feel as if it just happened yesterday! You caught every special moment, and our friends and family loved that they could be emailed the link to watch the video as well... I'm getting phone calls every day telling me how they cried watching it! I cant even imagine what the wedding video is going to be like.. if the recap is a preview, I know it will be amazing.

Sincerely,

Shelby and David Kleiman

P.S. here's a picture from our photographer - it is adorable, I love it!

I even wrote a caption: "World's Best Videographer filming World's Most Gorgeous Bride" haha

or....

"I couldn't have worked with a better videographer... thank you for making my wedding day so memorable!"

~Shelby (The Bride)
