The Residences at Two Liberty Place - From Offices to Luxury Condos

What a view we had as we shot from the top floor of The Residences at Two Liberty Place, the third tallest skyscraper in Philadelphia. We first blogged this shoot back in July. The tallest is the new Comcast Center Building. The second tallest is Two Liberty's sister, One Liberty. But hold onto your hats, folks - days ago, PhillySkyline.com broke news of what will be not only the tallest building in Philadelphia, but the tallest building in the United States - The American Commerce Center. At 1,500' to the top of the spire, it will drastically change Philly's skyline.

Mail Bag: Pittsburgh Wedding Video

Dave,

Mike and I got the video in the mail yesterday. We got to watch it last night. We LOVED it! You and your staff did an amazing job! We were so excited to watch it. We especially liked how you edited parts of the ceremony, reception..etc. for it not to be too long, but not leave out important details of the day. We felt like we were starring in our own movie! The video will be one of the most memorable reminders of our wedding day. I think we are going to watch it again this weekend! :)

Thanks again for making the trip to Pittsburgh on such a tight schedule. You and your staff's commitment truly showed on that day! Thank you for being a part of our special day and making it one we will never forget!

Mail Bag: Ellen and Anthony

Hi Dave,

I finally had a chance to watch my wedding video. It was hands down the best thing I've ever seen in my entire life. Being a bridesmaid 10 times, I have never seen a video quite so professional and movie-like. Thanks again for everything. You really out-did yourself!

Mail Bag: Morgan and Matt

Hi Dave and Sheryl

Thank you so much for the most amazing video we've ever seen. We knew when we hired you for our wedding you would produce nothing less than spectacular. We watched the video last night with my parents in absolute awe and with so much gratitude. We laughed and cried throughout the whole thing and were able to relive the incredible day that was our wedding. Please tell all of your production staff thank you and that we appreciate the hard work and effort that was put into the video. The editing alone was unbelievable. Thank you for fixing our introduction into the ballroom. It sounds a lot better to be married to Matt rather than his brother, Mike and thank you for cutting the Ave Maria part short. I remember standing there thinking, "why are they still playing." You knew exactly how to re-create the evening and make it better and more perfect.

I know that you were still working on it as of yesterday morning and when I received the call from my dad say he was coming home with the video I literally jumped out of my chair at work and yelled, "YES!" After watching the trailer about 1000 times and showing it to all of our friends they've been waiting with anticipation to see the rest of the video. Even my office wants to have a wedding movie lunch break so they can see it. I'm sure I'll be watching the video everyday for at least the next month. It'll definitely become a fixture in my dvd drive.

The out-takes were hilarious and I'm so happy that you put the part with you and me in there. I would certainly want to remember you as a part in my wedding day rather than someone behind the scenes. Even though we've only spoken a few times and spent a couple of hours together I felt an immediate connection as I know my father has as
well. I hope that in years to come we'll stay in touch and you'll be there to capture future events and milestones in our lives.

Have a wonderful weekend!
All the best,
Morgan and Matt Palmedo

Same Day Edit - Part 1 - What's all the Fuss?

Back in late 2004, I was interviewed for an EventDV article on "The Art of the Wedding-Day Edit". We had a lot of experience already producing Wedding Day Edits (also known as Same Day Edits) and I knew it would take off. Here we are, three years later with new technology, more creative video producers, a real appreciation for this art form, and the Same Day Edit is all the rage.

Now entire lectures are held on the topic each year at conferences hosted by the largest videographer association in the world - the Wedding and Event Videographers Association (WEVA) - and a younger organization, The 4Ever Group. With all of this new interest, I figured I would break it all down for our readers and demystify today's Same Day Edit with several episodes over the coming weeks. Of course, we should start with what a Same Day Edit (SDE) is.

An SDE can be something as simple as a montage of the moments of the day displayed at the cocktail hour or as complex as a mind-blowing short film including pre-produced segments shot and edited days, weeks, or even months before the event. The possibilities are limited only by imagination and the budget. But one thing is certain; a good Same Day Edit can bring real energy to the party. Guests will laugh, cry, and be amazed.

Most videographers have always offered some sort of large screen projection at events. But until the Same Day Edit became popular, what went on those screens was mostly limited to pre-produced segments or a live feed from on-site cameras. But videographers have gotten more creative as technology allows them to work more efficiently.

Editing systems are faster, smaller, and lighter, and the gear is easy to set up and tear down. Cameras are now equipped with hard drives or solid state media (like the memory card in your point and shoot still camera), doing away with the time-consuming task of capturing taped footage into the computer in real time. This all means that the bottlenecks that used to get in the way of actual editing time are virtually gone, allowing talented editors to create an emotional, high quality production in the time it takes to get from the ceremony to your first course at the reception.

For our first example in this series, let's take a look at Maria and Ron's Same Day Edit:
Maria and Ron
As a dancer her entire life, Maria convinced Ron to take dance lessons with her to prepare for their wedding. In our first meeting, Maria explained that she not only wanted her first dance to be perfect, she wanted her friends and family to see how their lives (and the dance) all came together. We came up with the plan to show their love story to the guests while Maria and Ron ducked out of the room to change into their dance attire. Maria and Ron's Same Day Edit was a customized hybrid of pre-production and day-of coverage that gave the perfect introduction to their first dance. As the video faded to black, the lights on the dance floor brightened just enough to reveal Ron and Maria live. It was magical.

Next time we'll take a look behind the scenes of Same Day Edits. Stay tuned.

New Advances in Wedding Videography

Check out my friends Brett Culp of The CVP Experience and Joshua Smith of Cinematic Bride who were just featured on GetMarried.com.

Brett discusses the advantages of high definition weddings, showing off your highlight reel on portable devices ( the Bridepod ), and wowing the crowds with same day edits. Josh covers the allure of cinematic love stories. Finally, Jason Silliman of Vowcast.com reviews the latest in live streaming your wedding to loved ones who cannot attend.

Congratulation on the press, guys!

Super 8 Wedding Films; Something Old, Something New

I recently blogged at Dave Williams Films about the romantic allure of real film productions, specifically Super8 Wedding Films. Ever since I shot backyard films in the 70s, I've always had a special place in my heart for real film. The look, the cadence, and the organic feel of film is often imitated in the digital world but rarely matched.

It is cost-prohibitive for many of our clients to produce an entire wedding film with Super 8 or 16mm film so several opt for our 'Film Vignettes', allowing us to pepper our HD video with real film segments.

In the case of Araks and Seth - recent clients of ours - we designed a film for them that included a highlight reel on their DVD made entirely of Super 8 film clips. As a successful designer in New York, Araks simply loved the look of film. Although most of her production was shot in HD as in this trailer, she wanted to be sure we captured the special moments in an artistic and romantic way with film.

The Best Lighting for HD Weddings

The other day a photographer who had never worked with us before asked me, "Do you use bright lights?" I thought, "To the blog, Robin. Time to bring our audience up to speed."

Some folks think of the stereotypical videographer who uses bright camera lights, blinding guests and destroying the mood of an otherwise perfect evening. Sure, those guys are still out there, but anyone who shoots truly candid moments knows that the path to a truly gorgeous and unobtrusive production is illuminated professionally and artistically.

Many planners, florists, and caterers understand the power of light when used properly. Light is what brings centerpieces to life, bathes the walls with color, and gently paints a romantic dance floor.

However, great lighting not only sets the mood, it helps preserve the beauty of the day and night in photographs, film, and especially high definition video. Details that would otherwise be lost are remembered.

    Professional lighting tips:
  • Ask your planner, venue coordinator, or florist if they do lighting or if they can recommend someone.
  • Ask about uplighting walls, or drapes.
  • Ask about double pinspotting the centerpieces, cake, or any element worth attention like an ice scuplture.
  • Ask about a splash on the dance floor. Gobos and broken light patterns will bring a three-dimensional energy to the dance floor and enhance the mood.
  • Light the band or other entertainment, drawing attention to the energy driving the party.

View a short demonstration of what lighting can do for your event.

Dave's Pet Projects - Dave Williams Films

When I launched Dave Williams Films in January of this year, I only planned on booking one or two of these pet projects in 2007. Dave Williams Films ( dwf ) is for referrals only and is designed to meet the needs of the most discriminating clients, celebrities, and those planning destination weddings and events. The response was tremendous and now I am booked for 2007. This year's destinations include St. Thomas, Australia, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. I still have time to take on 3 more dwf projects in 2008. Dave Williams Films projects start at $10,000 and are by referral only.

By the way, on my way to Australia I'll be spending a little time with David Robin of Boulevard Video Productions. On Tuesday, David spoke at the Greater Philadelphia Videographers Association (GPVA) meeting. David also held a full day training seminar for professional videographers in and around the Philadelphia area. David reviewed some of the techniques and strategies that have made him a true leader in this industry. He also announced his new venture, David Robin Films. Dave is a true artist and I want to publicly thank him for visiting Philadelphia and sharing his knowledge with us.

Dave Williams; One of Top 25 Videographers

Top 25 Hottest and Most Influential Videographers of 2006
Last year’s EVENTDV 25 was selected through a hybrid process, combining online nominations from readers with the efforts of a five-person executive
committee. Selecting this year’s all-star team was a whole new ballgame. With more awareness of the awards throughout the industry, I was confident we’d get enough reader participation to turn the entire selection process over to online voting. So the 2006 EventDV All-Star team—just like the major league baseball all-star squads that give us our theme—was selected entirely by the fans. And it will suffice to say that everyone who made this list has a lot of fans.

16mm Wedding Films

As a kid, I shot some Super8 film with my friends. Fast forward 30 years. With all of the technology available today, some of my clients long for that nostalgic look of film. The cadence, the color, and that vintage feel of film.

Super8 film has long been a popular upgrade at DVideography. And people like Paul Korver of Fifty Foot Films have helped promote on a national level the use of real film at weddings and other events. Thanks Paul!

And now we at DVideography also offer 16mm film vignettes. With four times the clarity of Super8, 16mm film is simply beautiful. WATCH A SAMPLE
